Psychotic Children

All the parents that have children with a diagnostic of mental disorder, especially psychosis, should read this, and ask themselves, how they have contribute to develop his own child psychosis.
Childhood Trauma, the Neurobiology of Adaptation, and "Use-dependent" Development of the Brain: How "States" Become "Traits"
Infant Mental Health Journal, Vol. 16, No.4, Winter 1995
Bruce D. Perry, Ronnie A. Pollard, Toi L. Blakley, and Domenico Vigilante
https://childtrauma.org/images/stories/Articles/state_trait_95.pdf
They are very few children born with psychosis. Most of them are like this, because they live a life of terror in childhood....emotional abuse...and develop psychosis as a defense mechanism to this terrifying medium.
First, a loving parent must learn the unique psychological word of the child, learn to understand the child IN HIS REALLITY, not in parent's reality.

Help! My son just got diagnosed with psychosis nsd, and ptsd. He is 14 yrs old. He has bouts of time he doesn't even remember. He has spirts of rage so far it has been to inadamit objects and himself but they still scare me. He has no consept of consequence and no matter what I do as punishment doesn't faze him. He has been suspended from school 3x this year. We are going thru the local mental health for counceling and medication but nothing is working. I don't want to put him in a resadential facility but I don't know what to do! I see my sons violence increase every day. I'm a sngle mom and I can't trust my son to be home by himself cause I don't know if he's hurting himself or seeing and talking to dilusions. I don't want him to feel abandoned by me if I have to put him into a residential facility. I don't know wha to do for him, with him,or because of him. I can't even find any books on how to parent for his disorders. Any advice, reference, or guidence is greatly appreciated.

Psychotic Children

I am reading these posts with a heavy heart. I am just coming out of a 3 month journey with my 13 yr old, schizophrenic, autistic, psychotic, disassociative social disorder son, like all of you are going through. I feel lucky in many ways, because my son has been accepted into a residential facility & is finally getting the help he needs. He has tried to commit suicide 5 times, attacked me & my husband multiple times. It took 3 months of Crisis visits, inpatient stays at a mental hospital 3 seperate times & his being black listed from said mental hospital, before someone listened. The difference for us, is the state we live in, Tennessee, has Tenncare( state funded Medicaid) & they are paying for his help & the facility. I highly suggest to look for this option in your state or even apply for social security & disability benefits for your child, because once they are diagnosed with the things I have read on here, they qualify & these will only help you get your child better help! Don't give up either, as you will be turned down at least twice for both. Keep applying with an attorney! If a move to a state with more options is feasible, do it. My heart goes out to all of you, truly. I hope & pray all of you find peace.

 in response to Zoemlk...   Hi,

I am dealing with the same issue - we need to get our daughter into a residential facility and I wanted to know if you were able to obtain any good information about financial assistance. Any help you could provide would be a life saver.

Thanks so much for your time.

in response to Olivias mommy...   My son is autistic, and sometimes all you can do is hold them down, and talk to them until it passes. Other times redirection works wonders. My son can be in the middle of a huge meltdown, but completely change gears if he sees a fish.

in response to bubba's mommy...   At this point the only thing you can do is get a lawyer and fight it out in court! To EVERYONE that has there children seeing councilors...BE SURE the councilor has professional training in the area of what ever illness your child has!!! BECAUSE THEY DO HAVE THE POWER BEHIND THEM TO TAKE YOUR CHILDREN FROM U!!!!

How do other parents discipline their children that have ADHD, bipolar, BPD, aspergers,ODD, OCD or other behavior and mental problems? I am at the point where I don't know what to do... Everyone quickly says " A good sound spanking will fix that". I disagree. I dont/cant and wont spank my daughter 24/7 and sometimes it only makes her behavior worse.

in response to StressedMomof2...   How did you get the residential treatment funded? I would like ideas from all of you on how you get appropriate treatments and then how to get it funded?
We can't even get the insurance company to pay when 7 year-old was hospitalized by his psychiatrist for out-of-control behaviors.

Psychotic Children

in response to C4itlin...   Oh my goodness...my heart just breaks for her!! I would suggest that she probably is suffering from PTSD considering what she has been through (possibly in addition to other things). If you have the ability (either as self-pay or with insurance), make sure that you get her into therapy and she needs a psychiatrist that specializes in and is board certified in child psychiatry. Don't wait because of her age. The earlier the intervention occurs, the better off she will be. Learn how to research, be her advocate and seek opinions. If she is diagnosed, research the illness, the prescribed meds and options that she may have, especially in the education system. Do not be passive as you are her best shot for a normal, healthy life. Good luck to you both and NEVER underestimate the power of prayer! :)

in response to ...   I've read that there hasn't been an increase in the number of children diagnosed with severe mental illness... only an increase in awareness. You see, we don't have the option of sending them away into hiding anymore.

My son has had every test in the book run on him by several teams of neurologists. They have no explanation for what is going on in his head. I certainly wish that there were a simple explanation, but there just isn't.

in response to Natural Health for Emotional...   I really do think that sugar is a major culprit in my 10-yr-old son's mental illness, but it's almost impossible to keep it from him. We have locks on fridge and pantry, but he finds ways to get it anyway--usually by stealing from other people. And he instinctively knows when I am feeding him something healthy, and he will refuse to eat. Any suggestions??? (Bear in mind, he is psychotic and by definition, irrational and unreasonable.)

My 4 year old daughter has had a very rough life. When she was 8 months old a tv fell on her and she had a skull fracture. Since then she was mentally and physical abused by her father. She was also molested at the age of 3 by her father. She was in counseling, which wasn't helping at all. She is very aggressive and throws tantrums all the time. She will not follow directions at all. She has problems being in public and around different unfamiliar faces. She also doesn't like loud noises or bright lights. I've been doing research on different things and the closest that i found could be wrong is ODD or Autism. Please if you have an suggestions let me know.

. My 9 yr. old daughter is diagnosed ax AD/HD, Bipolar (some days tripolar) and my lawyer mentioned she could possibly be BPD...which there is no cyre or medication for this. Ive researched it over and over and everything ive read is like the hell I live with. My child is also a victim of sexual abuse which intensifies all the emotions, rage, etc. I've never heard of ODD and am interested in learning more about it. Also, I've applied for SS for her and was denied. Has anyone had problems w/ this as well?? The extra insurance (medicaid) would give us so many more options and help.

As I read sneakersjohnsons post I felt like i was reading my life. I have a 9 yr old son that has been diagnosed with psychosis, bipolar & mild autis. it has been a very long road of struggles from doctors, therepists, hospitalizations & medications. He recently been put on a new medication & is doing some what better. But of course at any minute he can go into a full rage. I am glad I am not alone in this.

Psychotic Children

I think I have had mental and emotional challenges for most of my life. An old therapist who had meant well suggested that some of my behavior and the way I had breakdowns might be psychotic. That was years ago and although it was embarassing for me to hear what she said I began to take her suggestion seriously and read about it on my own. I read that psychosis was caused by chromium and Thiamine deficiency. Medicine made things worse and I cannot take supplements that someone might find in GNC or Vitamin Shoppe for the same reason so I read where I could find these ingredients in food.

Peas and Brewers yeast has lots of chromium and thiamin.
I bought baby food peas becasue they are easy and fast, small and convenient to eat right away. And portable. I bring it with me when I leave the house.

Brewers yeast is easy to mix into it... maybe 2 tablespoons.

I take it just like that becasue i already know I will feel better almost right away. It works for me. These two food sources are very high in these vitamins and minerals. I come back to being myself. I feel better.  I feel comfortable and at ease again. I do not eat this regularly as preventative because too much of anything is not good either. But I am getting better and better at noticing how I feel and the subtlies and what nutrient I might be low on and how much this affects my behavior.

The peas and brewers yeast I take when I just feel really angry and overloaded and can't get my thoughts to make sense.

The other thing I use often is goat cheese yogurt by Liberte.... this is very easy to digest and I noticed a very close relation to my emotional health and how long something sits in my stomach making pressure on mywhole abdomen from undigested food. I mix 2 tablespoons of organic blackstrap molasses. Here I get natural Calcium from the yogurt and protein with loads of magnesium from the blackstap. Don't give too much blackstap. It is also a laxative which can be helpful in small amounts.

Please write if you tried any natural ways to heal yourself or your children. When I say heal I mean just to bump ourselves back into nutritional alignment with what our bodies may be deficient in and just feel better.

3 years ago this amazing mom gave me the idea that it would work when she used spinach to calm her child who had felt nervous from time to time. That works too by the way but for me i have to eat a whole can.

Also, for me, any sugar and all types of sugar cause bad symptoms. I stay away and try to keep my blood sugar constant with homemade tasty oatmeal meals I found on the internet.
